Isaac Anderson

Sculpture · Mixed media

I build the order. The material supplies the entropy.

Isaac Anderson makes cast sculpture and mixed-media relief in cement, plaster, and steel. He works between two studios — Southern California and Southern Kentucky — and the split shows up in the work: one half built to tolerance, the other left to weather.

Trained in [discipline] at [school], he came to casting through [route] and has been pouring since [year]. Each piece begins as a controlled form and is finished by processes he doesn't direct: hydration, pigment migration, hairline cracking, and the slow ageing that continues in whatever room the work ends up in.

He works to commission for lobbies, hospitality interiors, and private collections, and keeps a small number of available works in the catalogue at any time.

Artist statement

Cement records everything that happens to it and forgives nothing. I front-load the order — the steel, the formwork, the single pour — and then hand the piece to processes I can only partly steer.

What comes back is neither accident nor design. The hairline that opens on the fourth day was not drawn, but it was made possible. I am interested in that narrow band where control ends and the material takes over, and in surfaces honest enough to show where the line fell.
